Anti-piracy regulations of manufacturers

Over the last few years piracy has become a problem all across the entertainment industry. This is true of the video game industry as any other. As a result the makers of the games have had to take steps to prevent the piracy of games. These steps may involve anything from threatening letters to criminal prosecution.

The anti-piracy regulations of video game manufacturers are largely the same as the copyright laws as they currently exist. All video games are protected by copyright, even the old ones that means that they cannot be sold or given away by anybody but the copyright holder. This is a problem that the gaming industry is facing in that many people are copying and either giving away or selling games. This is illegal and it is something that the game makers are working hard to put a stop to.

The only reason that you are allowed to make a copy of a video game is for your own personal use. You may back up the game so that if the one that you purchased was damaged you will still have a copy. It is not legal for you to allow other people to use your copy of the game. This true whether you sell it to them or simply give it away. In either case you are violiating a copyright.

There are a lot of people who also believe that creating emulators of old games is acceptable becuase they are no longer being sold. This is not in fact the case. The games are still under copyright and the same protections apply. There is a reason that the older games are no longer being sold and that decision belongs to the copyright holder, therefore it is not legal to produce or sell these games.

In most cases the only recourse that the games makers have in cases of piracy is to sue the people who are giving the games away, selling them or downloading them illegally. That being said the high cost of going to court makes this unlikely to happen in most cases. Far more likely is that you will be sent a threatening letter instead. However if you continue to use copyrighted materials illegal you can be pretty sure that they will take you to cour at some point.

In recent years the government have started to become much more aware of the problems of video game piracy and they have gotten involved in the enforcement of copyright laws. In particular they have started to shut down websites that make it avialable illegally. Over the last few years a lot of sites have this happen and you can be pretty sure that it will continue to happen in the future. In some cases there may also be criminal prosecutions for giving away or selling copyrighted materials.
