Latest trend: IR tracking, registration of movement

One of the biggest changes in gaming technology took place in 2005 when Nintendo introduced the Wii. The innovation was a controller that worked in way that was completely different from the way in which other controllers worked. The Wii works by using IR tracking and registration of movements to control the action of the game rather than the push of buttons. This has opened up whole new avenues for gamedesigners to develop new products.

One of the latest trends in gaming consoles is infrared tracking and the registration of movements. By far the most well known example of this is the Nintendo Wii. This is a gaming console that uses a controller that is very different from those used on other games. Through the use of an infrared motion sensor, an acclerometer and an ability to recognize gestures the controller allows you to play games in a way that would be more natural than you would find on other remotes. This has even reached the point where games can be designed so that if you want to throw a ball you would make a throwing motion with the controller in your hand.

The obvious advnatage of a controller like the Wii has is that it allows for games to be played more like they would in real life. This is most noticeable in sports games but you will also see it in other games as well. This has been done in large part to attract people who previously hadn't played video games to buy the console. In this respect the technology has been very successful.

The ability to control games with motion rather than by pushing buttons has opened up whole new areaas of game design. It is now possible to design games that would not be practical on other consoles. These are mainly games that involve physical activity. Indeed one of the main selling points of the Wii is that it allows for the creation of games that require a considerable amount of physical effort. For example there are games that are being marketed as exercise programs. These are the types of games that have attracted non-gamers.

While the Wii has been popular with non-gamers it has recieved some criticism from people who are serious players. The main issue is that while titles that were created specifically for the Wii work well with it the ones that were not tend to have issues. This is becoming less of an issue as more and more games are being developed specifically for the Wii but if you do play a game that was designed to be played with a traditional controller you will find it hard to play at some points. As the technology develops however this will likely be less of a problem as well.
